Welcome to Quest ActiveRoles Resource Manager

Quest ActiveRoles Resource Manager eliminates the complexity of resource management, secures your Windows infrastructure, and allows you to maintain operational efficiency and sustain continuous compliance.

NOTE: This Customer Technology Preview release is intended to demonstrate the current state of Quest’s ActiveRoles Resource Manager. As a pre-release application, it is not intended to be used in production environments or on production computers.

Known Issues

The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of Quest ActiveRoles Resource Manager Customer Technology Preview.

Feature

Known Issue

Security Index

Once a Managed Host has been configured, security index updates may not immediately occur

The Security Index may not immediately be updated and the newly configured Managed Host may not display. This occurs because the Agent needs time to perform an initial security scan. This scan can vary in duration from a few seconds to many minutes for some resource types such as NTFS files and folders.

If after 5 minutes no information is displayed in the Security Index for a Managed Host which is in an Ok state, restart the Quest ActiveRoles Resource Manager Agent service on the Managed Host computer. This will force the Agent to send an update to the server.

File System data in the Security Index is not complete

The first update sent to the server from an Agent indexing File System information on a Managed Host may be incomplete. This situation will correct itself once the agent completes it’s initial scan of files and folders.

SIDs that were unresolved during the first scan will never be resolved

If a Managed Host reports an unresolved SID to the server, the name of this SID will never be resolved even if the account is resolvable by another Agent or the Management Server.

Additionally, an account which has been renamed after its initial addition to the Security Index, will not have its name changes reflected in the Security Index view.

Security Index updates may be lost if the SQL Server is running on a computer other than the Management Server

An issue in the Security Index updating system can lead to some updates being lost if the SQL server being used by the Management Server is running on a computer other than the Management Server. It is recommended that both of these programs execute on the same computer, to ensure peak performance.

Server

Unexpected error messages or no errors at all displayed when a server connection is lost

If the ActiveRoles Resource Manager client loses its server connection, the error message displayed may be unexpected. In some cases, the loss of connection will give no error message at all; it will manifest as blank lists of objects. If this occurs, ensure that the ActiveRoles Resource Manager server is operational.

General

If a domain housing a registered Service Account cannot be contacted by the Management Server, some operations may take a long time

In particular, the Enterprise, Managed Domain, Managed Host, and Service Account nodes within ActiveRoles Resource Manager may become slow to respond. To fix this, remove any Service Accounts registered from down domains, or ensure all domains housing registered Service Accounts can be contacted by the Management Server.

The ActiveRoles Resource Manager Customer Technology Preview will not run on a 64 bit windows computer

To run the ActiveRoles Resource Manager Customer Technology Preview, you must install the program on a 32 bit Windows Server 2003 computer. At this time, 64 bit windows computers are not supported, even in 32 bit emulation mode.

Remote removal of Agent Software from Windows 2000 computers may occasionally fail and the indexing of Windows NT 4.0 computers is not supported

In some cases, the remote removal of the Agent from Windows 2000 servers may fail. When this occurs, the Managed Host entry may be deleted, but the Agent will still be present on the computer. To remove the software, stop the Quest ActiveRoles Resource Manager Agent service, and remove the Agent software from the Add/Remove Programs applet.

On Windows 2000 server computers, the share level permissions may display as “unknown”. This can occur when there is a combination of Deny and Allow permissions set on a Share. The Allow permission level may display as “unknown”, while the Deny displays the correct permission level.

Automatic removal of the Agent software may fail if the Agent service is not currently running on the Managed Host.

Performance Counters

The following Performance Counters associated with ActiveRoles Resource Manager are not automatically deleted when the ActiveRoles Resource Manager is uninstalled.

To remove these counters, the following Registry keys should be deleted from the Customer Technology Preview host computer:
